£70m "monster" now wants to sign for Liverpool – he's a big Quansah upgrade

Is this really Liverpool? Remarkably, FSG are firing on all cylinders in the summer transfer market, acting with the viciousness of the champions that they are.

Indeed, Arne Slot led Liverpool to the Premier League title last season, shouldering the unenviable weight of Jurgen Klopp’s still-warm seat in the dugout. And he did it with minimal investment, only welcoming Federico Chiesa to the fold for £12.5m in August 2024.

FSG have long towed the line between shrewdness and frugality in transfer windows, but with Michael Edwards back in the boardroom, there’s a newfound sense of awareness that Anfield stands atop a mountainous pile of European clubs vying for the ascendancy.

But for all the Florian Wirtz’s, the Jeremie Frimpong’s and Milos Kerkez’s, there are some outgoings in the pipeline too.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s already gone, and the 31-year-old Andy Robertson is being chased by Atletico Madrid. And the backline is set for more shake-up, with Jarell Quansah on the brink of a move abroad.

Why Liverpool are selling Jarell Quansah

Quansah, 22, is a fantastic talent. Across the past two campaigns, he has proven himself worthy of a place in Liverpool’s first team, winning the Carabao Cup and the English top flight and appearing 58 times in total.

However, he suffered a setback right at the start of Slot’s tenure, withdrawn at half-time during the season opener against Ipswich Town, Slot later citing his team’s lack of success in the duel as the reason behind the tweak.

Features proved few and far between over the next several months, and though the English ace played a larger role over the later months of the term, he will no doubt be frustrated by his lack of opportunities.

It’s for this reason that negotiations have moved apace with Bayer Leverkusen, who are closing on an agreement for the transfer of Quansah, worth €40m (£34m).

Jarell Quansah for Liverpool

A formal bid has not yet been made, but all parties expect an agreeable resolution, with personal terms not thought to be an issue.

As such, Liverpool will need to sign themselves a replacement – and they’ve got one in mind all right.

Liverpool set to bid for new centre-back

According to The Telegraph, Liverpool are expected to make a ‘significant offer’ for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who helped his side win the FA Cup in May.

Though a formal approach has not yet been made, Scott Wilson of the Northern Echo has reported that the Reds are ‘firm favourites’ to sign the central defender, with Football Insider even stating that he’s told friends he “wants to join Liverpool”.

Guehi is entering the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, so although Tottenham Hotspur tabled a £70m bid in January, Eagles chairman Steve Parish will know that his bargaining chips are diminishing, for the Reds could snap him up on a free next year.

Why Liverpool want Marc Guehi

Guehi’s contract situation means FSG hold the cards (or, at least, more than they would have a year or two ago). And it’s a good thing, for the central defender is one of the most talented and complete defenders in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehicelebrates after the match

A strong and secure presence, Oliver Glasner has unlocked a new level of ball-playing quality at Palace that Guehi has latched onto and used to foster his technical skill.

Last season, he was an iron-solid star for his side, instrumental in beating Manchester City to win the FA Cup.

The 24-year-old is entering his prime years and has now acquired a certain taste for silver, but it’s not the Magpies he will be joining; instead, Liverpool could provide this titan with a home to grow into one of the best defenders across Europe, surpassing Quansah in Slot’s ranks.

Quansah’s 2024/25 campaign was perhaps not the best representation of his potential, so instead, see below the Englishmen’s statistics contrasted against each other in the Premier League, Guehi’s from last year, and the Merseyside talent’s from 2023/24, under Klopp’s leadership.

Now, it might feel like at a glance the younger Three Lions star (who has been called up but not yet made his official debut) has outperformed Guehi, but the Palace man’s inferior pass completion rate and success in the duel, which is largely down to the 6 foot 3 Liverpool talent’s dominance, is circumstantial.

Last season, Guehi won 63% of his ground duels (Quansah won 60% in 2023/24) in a Palace side which battled adversity near the bottom of the table in the earlier phases of the campaign and still throughout fought on a lower rung of the ladder than Slot’s title-challenging Reds.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehiin action

It goes without saying that Guehi was in the thick of more defensive action, and a move to Merseyside would see his crispness on the ball developed while adding a progressive, mobile quality which has led one analyst to hail him as “England’s best centre-back.”

The south London centre-half, moreover, ranked among the top 9% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues last season for goal involvements, the top 12% for shot-creating actions, and the top 18% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.

The Premier League perhaps hasn’t yet woken up to this player’s underrated passing game, but they will.

Slot is happy to sell Quansah for a reason. Though the prospect is highly talented and may yet become a player of distinction under Erik ten Hag’s mentorship at Leverkusen, Guehi is simply a cut above, a “monster in defence”, as has been noted by reporter Bobby Manzi.

We’ll hark back to that earlier point: Slot was frustrated by Quansah’s lack of success in the duel last August, later suggesting that he’s “outgrown being a talent” and perhaps needs to play with regularity, something the Dutch boss is not willing to offer him at Anfield.

Liverpool are aiming for the stars this summer, and by bringing in Guehi to rival Van Dijk and Konate in central defence, the club’s lofty ambitions might just be realised.

Mark Watt set to continue with 24-yard delivery against Australia

Scotland spinner was controversially dead-balled when deploying variation against Oman

Matt Roller14-Jun-2024Mark Watt, the Scotland left-arm spinner, will continue to bowl his trademark variation from 24 yards in their must-win fixture against Australia on Saturday night, despite controversially being dead-balled when doing so against Oman last week.Watt regularly bowls from behind the bowling crease to throw batters off: “It’s just trying to rush [the batters],” he has explained. “By the time I’ve let it go, the batsman looks up and the ball’s halfway down the wicket.” It has brought him plenty of success, most notably accounting for all three of his wickets in a win over West Indies at the 2022 T20 World Cup.But during Scotland’s seven-wicket win against Oman on Sunday, umpire Chris Brown twice called “dead ball” when Watt bowled his 24-yarder, with batter Khalid Kail backing away on both occasions. The second of those two balls hit the top of middle stump, with Watt and captain Richie Berrington both asking umpire Brown for clarification.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by ICC (@icc)

Watt suggested that Kail had been “a bit sneaky” in backing away, a view shared by Tom Moody on the ICC’s commentary. “The batter’s looking up. He’s ready. To me, that is a legitimate ball,” Moody said. “The ball is live. As soon as the batter has placed his bat down and faces up, looks up to the bowler, he’s ready to go.”There was some confusion in the Scotland camp as to why Watt had been dead-balled. “He does it a lot, and he’s taken a lot of wickets with it,” Michael Leask, the allrounder, said on Friday. “I think they might have given the batter one warning, but they perceived that he wasn’t looking, [when] the video showed that he clearly was looking.”There has been some conjecture about whether it should be legal for Watt to bowl from behind where the bowler’s end umpire is standing, with the ICC and MCC’s interpretations understood to differ slightly. In any case, both balls that were called dead against Oman were delivered from in front of umpire Brown.Leask said that Watt would not be deterred by the decision to dead-ball him: “He will be doing it again. I can guarantee he will bowl more than one against Australia. It’s almost the element of surprise… It’s also how good he is at holding his length. It still spins, it’s just that fraction longer. Man, it’s horrible to face, even for us in the nets. You know it’s coming, every two minutes.”Australia have never faced Scotland in a T20 international but are alert to Watt’s variations, with vice-captain Matthew Wade revealing he had seen footage of it while scrolling on Instagram Reels. “It’s clever bowling,” Wade said. “A lot of players are looking to get a little bit of an advantage and to sneak up and bowl a ball from near behind the umpire is clever. I’ve just got to make sure I don’t pull away when he does it this time.”Related

Wade escapes fine after argument with umpire in win over England

Jones: 'If Warner opens the bowling it'd be pretty funny'

Wade was reprimanded after Australia’s win over England following an argument with umpire Nitin Menon over a similar incident, when Wade felt a ball should have been called dead after he backed away. “I mean, I’ve played international cricket for 15 years and I’m learning the rules as we go,” he said.”I don’t actually even know the rule: once you take stance and face up, are you saying that you’re ready [for the bowler] to bowl? I actually have no idea of the rule. I think it’s just got to be common sense at some stages. I’m sure he [Watt] will pull it out tomorrow at some stage and we’ll see who’s on strike; hopefully, it’s not me.”Where previously Full-Members teams could be caught unaware by quirks of opposition players, it is now standard for analysts to send pre-match packs highlighting anything unusual, like Watt’s 24-yarder. “You’ve got to do a little bit of research before the game to see what you’re getting,” Wade said. “We’ll do that tomorrow.”Individually, we’ll go through their bowlers: whether it’s England or South Africa, we don’t really sit down as a batting unit and go through bowlers individually as a collective. We get little packs that get sent out tonight and go through their bowlers individually. I’ll have a look at them over the next 24 hours. I haven’t seen heaps and heaps of them.”England’s thumping win over Oman has put an end to speculation that Australia could collude with Scotland to win by a small enough margin to send England home on net run-rate, and Wade said that the identity of the second qualifier from Group B was “not taking up any oxygen” in team discussions: “We’re just going to go out and play the game of cricket and see what happens.”Leask suggested that Scotland are expecting England to beat Namibia on Saturday afternoon, saying: “It’s a must-win game – always has been. We knew coming into this game that it would be. We expected England to play well in the group and that’s exactly what they’ve done… It’s a hell of an opportunity for us to go and play really good cricket and take on one of the best [teams] in the world.”

Rangers close in on signing "great athlete" who could be Ryan Kent 2.0

This promises to be a very busy summer for Rangers at Ibrox.

New manager of the Gers, Russell Martin, is going to want to oversee a mass-overhaul of his squad, with plenty of ins and outs expected in the coming weeks.

So, could the Light Blues be about to land the first signing of the Martin era?

Rangers targeting defensive reinforcements

Things are ramping up at Ibrox right now with a move for winger Kwame Poku reportedly set to be wrapped up.

However, that’s not the only deal edging closer to completion.

Kwame Poku for Peteborough.

Indeed, according to a report in Spain, Rangers have reached an agreement with Bournemouth to sign Max Aarons on a season-long loan, adding that an agreement is “nearly finalised”.

The 25-year-old full-back burst onto the scene with Norwich City, making 213 appearances for the Canaries, 70 of which came in the Premier League, touted as the next big thing, almost joining Tottenham Hotspur for £15m when he was still a teenager.

This big move never came to fruition, moving to Bournemouth two summers ago, but making very little impact on the South Coast, thereby actually spending the second half of last season on loan at Valencia, albeit he featured only five times for los Che.

Nevertheless, still only 25, Aarons is a player with plenty of potential, so could have a big impact in Govan.

Why Max Aarons could be Rangers' next loan star

Rangers have had plenty of players arrive on loan and have had a big impact throughout history, as the table below outlines.

Rangers have had plenty of loan players in recent seasons and throughout history, but few have had as big an impact as Ryan Kent, underlined by the fact his move from Liverpool was made permanent for £7.5m, a club record for modern times.

Most expensive SPFL signings (timeless) Rangers Celtic

Kent would go on to make 218 appearances for the club, scoring 33 goals and providing 56 assists, winning the Premiership title and the Scottish Cup, a key figure in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team that reached the Europa League Final.

The winger now plys his trade in Major League Soccer for Seattle Sounders, starting the Rave Green’s Club World Cup opener against Botafogo last Sunday, preparing to take on Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the coming days.

So, why could Aarons be Rangers’ latest superstar loanee?

Well, writer Kai Watson labels him a “great athlete”, while Tom Quartly of Breaking the Lines believes the full-back offers ‘fluidity in both attacking and defensive phases’, claiming he has the talent to be one of English football’s ‘brightest stars’.

So, while Aarons hasn’t played a lot of football in recent years, he’s far from finished at 25 years old, and still has plenty left to offer.

What the arrival of a new right-back, who will surely have been guaranteed minutes, means for captain James Tavernier remains to be seen, but Aarons is surely just the first of many highly-rated Premier League or EFL players on their way to Ibrox this summer.

Tavernier didn’t particularly enjoy his best season at Ibrox, anyway, so this is certainly a deal worth getting over the line as Martin seeks to improve the squad.

£5,000-p/w Rangers ace who praised Clement has contacts to leave Ibrox

In what could be the first frustrating blow of Russell Martin’s tenure, one Rangers player who was once full of praise for Philippe Clement may reportedly make an immediate exit under the new manager.

Patrick Stewart welcomes "great" Russell Martin

The Rangers managerial search is over at long last with Martin now officially appointed. The former Southampton boss arrives following months of speculation, which saw the Gers linked with Steven Gerrard, who would have been returning for a second stint in charge, and Davide Ancelotti, who would have been stepping into his first managerial role.

ByRoss Kilvington Jun 7, 2025

In the end, Martin was the man for those at Ibrox and new owners the 49ers in a decision that they’ll hope to see pay dividends in the next 12 months. CEO Patrick Stewart has been among those to hand Martin a warm welcome, telling the official Rangers website: “We conducted a really rigorous process and I’ve been using that word a lot, process, but it is true here.

“The head coach for Rangers or any club is such a pivotal appointment in that they can take a group of individuals and turn them into a winning team, or not.

“It is the most important hire that I think the club makes and Russell came through different stages of the process always as a standout.

“We’ve been very thorough in terms of understanding the style of play and ensuring that is compatible with the style of football that the club wants to play. We need a head coach that is right for the club and Russell shows great leadership, he is a culture architect, so he is somebody we think will come in and really drive standards at Auchenhowie.”

The new manager has far from got an easy task on his hands, however, and reports have already revealed that he could yet be dealt an immediate blow on the transfer front this summer.

Trio of clubs express interest in McCausland

As reported by Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph, Basel, OH Leuven and FC Cincinnati have all made contact and expressed interest in signing Ross McCausland, who could make an immediate departure under Martin this summer. The 22-year-old is yet to sign a new deal at Ibrox and, therefore, has just two years remaining on his current contract.

Reportedly earning around £5,000-a-week in his current deal at the club, it remains to be seen if McCausland puts pen to paper on new and improved terms in Scotland. The young winger was a fan of former manager Clement and may now not even get the chance to work under a fresh face in Martin if he does depart.

Full of praise for his ex-boss, McCausland told reporters after netting the second goal in Rangers’ 2-0 win over Malmo in September: “There are a lot of things in my game now that he’s brought into my game. To be able to go out into these games and bring these things that I’ve been working makes it all worth it.”

Dream Diaz upgrade: Liverpool reignite interest in £100m Wirtz alternative

Florian Wirtz is the name on everyone’s lips at Liverpool right now, with FSG having taken the lead in the race to sign the Germany international, who is also being courted by Bayern Munich.

That’s according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who broke the news this evening that the Bundesliga champions are fearful of Anfield, in fact growing resigned to the fact that the 22-year-old will join Liverpool if he switches club this summer.

Manchester City had a strong interest in bringing him in, but have taken a step back given that Wirtz’s employers are believed to value him in the ballpark of €150m (£126m).

However, Spanish sources believe the Reds would need to cash in on some existing quality in order to facilitate a move, and with Barcelona hoping to sign Luis Diaz, some differing cogs might fall into place.

While Darwin Nunez is also expected to depart Anfield, Diaz, 28, has been one of Arne Slot’s most important players, but should be sold this summer nonetheless.

Why Liverpool should sell Luis Diaz

Diaz joined Liverpool from FC Porto in January 2022 for a fee rising to £49m, ostensibly as Sadio Mane’s successor, for the Senegalese superstar left for Bayern Munich the following summer.

He’s ebbed and flowed, partly due to a crushing injury suffered during his first full season, but who can say Diaz hasn’t enjoyed a special season under Slot’s wing, prolific and dynamic in a Premier League-winning team?

However, he’s hardly irreplaceable, and entering the penultimate year of his contract besides. The Colombian has played as a left winger and a makeshift centre-forward this year, and Cody Gakpo holds down the fort on the flank and FSG are searching for a new number nine.

If Barcelona are serious about their interest and willing to pay a €80m (£68m) fee, as has been suggested in Spain, to pull Diaz from Merseyside, this would be something the club should consider, especially as they are searching for new attacking cogs.

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz

Though Wirtz is the dream, Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes will be hedging his bets until the moment of truth, and indeed appears to have identified an alternative who could still prove an upgrade on Diaz, one of the Premier League’s standout wingers.

Liverpool reignite interest in PL star

As per Football Insider, Liverpool are still interested in signing Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon, nearly one year on from exploring a deal for the England international as the Magpies sweated over PSR limitations.

Gordon, a boyhood Liverpool fan who was released from the academy before joining Everton aged 11, had informed his inner circle that he wanted to make the move make to Merseyside, and though he’s now signed a new long-term deal at St. James’ Park, would still be open to the transfer.

Anthony Gordon celebrates for Newcastle

Of course, the reality would be far more strenuous for the Reds given the 24-year-old is valued at £100m by his side, who are in a good position to qualify for the Champions League ahead of the weekend’s culminating round of Premier League fixtures.

Why Anthony Gordon would be an upgrade on Diaz

Whether Liverpool would have the means to sign both Wirtz and Gordon after adding full-backs on both sides of the backline and with the ongoing need for a new striker remains to be seen. However, it’s unlikely all of this would happen.

Instead, Gordon could be signed as a contingency if things don’t fall into place regarding Wirtz, and the Newcastle man has enough quality to still prove an upgrade on the high-flying Diaz.

Gordon might not have had quite the same year as the 2023/24 campaign, in which his talismanic performances helped Newcastle through injury woes, sealing an individual accolade as United’s Player of the Year.

He hit 28 direct goal involvements, which is more than Diaz has ever achieved in a single campaign for Liverpool. Moreover, Gordon is four years younger than Anfield’s man, thus with plenty of scope for growth.

Of course, this isn’t to say he hasn’t enjoyed a good year on Tyneside, scoring nine goals and adding seven assists from 32 starts across all competitions.

He also ranks among the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League this season for successful crosses made into the penalty area per 90, as per FBref, which is a weapon Liverpool could certainly do with if they are to sign a recognised focal frontman this summer.

But his most interesting tool, aside from some immense physicality and athleticism, the cornerstones of his skill set, is his fluidity, used across different attacking areas since leaving Everton for Newcastle in a £45m deal back in January 2023.

As you can see, Gordon’s been ferried about the frontline during his time in Eddie Howe’s system, though it’s clear he’s at his rip-roaring best when in his natural left-sided berth, with blistering speed and tricky feet allowing him to get the better of even the meanest defenders on the continent.

This is a further illustration of how he could replace Diaz, whose excellent season at Liverpool boils down to his ability to provide relief as a striker, thus allowing Gakpo to play off the wing.

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz

Gordon’s price tag is further evidence that he has what it takes to become a superstar in red. Not just a potent threat, the English winger averages one tackle and 4.4 successful duels per game this season, bringing a tenacious attitude that emphasises his dynamic underlying qualities.

He’s also younger now than Diaz was when he first signed for Liverpool (25 years old). While Liverpool’s chiefs would be wary of spending £100m on an attacking player who failed to hit double figures in goals or assists this season, Gordon’s talent is unquestionable, having described himself as a “nightmare to play against.”

Club hold "positive" talks with £200k-a-week Arsenal star who wants to leave

Arsenal face the prospect of losing a “big player” for Mikel Arteta in the next few weeks, as it is believed he’s now keen to leave the Emirates, and one club has already made an “official move”.

A good portion of Gunners squad members are already poised to end their time at N5, including some pretty considerable names.

£359k-per-week striker would join Arsenal "immediately", Berta wants him

He’s apparently very keen.

ByEmilio Galantini May 24, 2025

Brazilian Serie A side Flamengo, who’ve agreed to sign Jorginho from Arsenal, are now set to formally land the Italy international before their Club World Cup campaign begins on June 17, with Arteta’s side green-lighting his earlier-than-anticipated exit (Fabrizio Romano).

Left-back Kieran Tierney is also set to re-join Celtic after shaking hands on a pre-contract with the Scottish champions, as was confirmed all the way back in February. The left-back scored in his last ever game for Arsenal against Southampton on Sunday, after getting the starting nod from Arteta, with Tierney signing off on his north London career in style.

Some reports in Italy claim that left-back Nuno Tavares is on his way to Lazio on a permanent deal, with the Serie A side paying around £4 million for him after an impressive debut season at the club overall – even taking into account the Portuguese’s injury problems over the second half of 24/25.

Albert Sambi Lokonga is also very likely to leave again this summer after spending this season on loan at Sevilla, and there are still questions surrounding the future of star midfielder Thomas Partey.

The Ghanaian recently entered talks with Arsenal over a new deal, indicating his willingness to stay, but it is far from a guarantee, with some sources believing that the £200,000-per-week midfielder would have to take a pay-cut (ESPN).

Arteta, for his part, is very keen on the 31-year-old extending his stay, after what has arguably been his finest season at Arsenal since joining from Atlético Madrid in 2020.

“Yeah, in regards to Thomas, consistency-wise, it’s been his best season,” said Arteta when quizzed about Partey’s future.

“I think the way he’s played, performed, his availability has been exceptional, and he’s a really important player for us.”

Thomas Partey keen to leave Arsenal as Besiktas hold talks

Now, as per Turkish news website Fanatik, the midfield general is actually becoming more tempted by the exit door.

They report that Partey is eager to leave Arsenal and start the next chapter of his career, and Besiktas are the first club to make an “official move” for him. The Süper Lig giants apparently held “positive” talks with Partey’s main representative, and he is top of Besiktas’ list of targets.

Depending on terms, the far east of Europe could be a tempting landing spot, and this isn’t the first time that clubs from Turkey have been linked with a move for Partey, as he reportedly attracted interest from the Turks and Saudi Arabia last year.

Called a “big player” by Arteta, Partey has proved that time and time again throughout this term with some exceptional midfield displays, and his injury problems have now also become a thing of the past.

Losing such an experienced and proven member of the Arsenal squad would undoubtedly come as a blow, especially on a free, so it is unlikely that Andrea Berta will give up easily when it comes to tempting him with an extension.

Derby now fighting Blackburn for midfielder who won 139 duels this season

Derby County and Blackburn Rovers have been embroiled in an intriguing backstory this campaign, centred around John Eustace, who could now have a say in a transfer saga involving both clubs.

Derby County look to build on surviving relegation

Despite fighting for large parts of the campaign in the relegation zone, Derby secured their Championship status by the skin of their teeth after playing out an anticlimactic 0-0 draw with Stoke City on the final day. Working a minor miracle at Pride Park, John Eustace managed to guide the Rams to safety after they were previously seven points adrift of survival, losing only one of their final six league matches.

Derby County managerJohnEustaceand Jerry Yates

Controversially, the 45-year-old arrived at Derby from Blackburn Rovers, which was a surprise turn of events at the time due to the vast distance between both clubs in the English second-tier standings. Nevertheless, his decision proved to be worthwhile even in the face of doubters, something Eustace was quick to point out once the Rams confirmed they would be staying in the Championship.

Leaving some frosty relations at his former club, Blackburn missed out on a playoff berth by two points, creating more intrigue between both sides as they go head-to-head again next season. Crossing paths once again, Eustace’s Derby are now fighting his old side for the signature of a talented midfielder from League One, per reports.

Derby County and Blackburn Rovers fight to sign Ethan Erhahon

According to EFL Analysis, Derby and Blackburn both want to sign Lincoln City midfielder Ethan Erhahon, who is attracting interest from a clutch of other clubs in the second and third tier of English football.

Plymouth Argyle, Millwall, Preston North End and Oxford United are also in the hunt for the Scotland Under-21 cap, who could fetch the Imps a seven-figure fee if he were to be sold.

Labelled “brilliant” by Michael Skubala for his dominant nature in the middle of the park, Erhahon has won no fewer than 139 duels in League One this season as Lincoln secured a comfortable mid-table finish. Formerly of St Mirren, the 24-year-old is known for his abilities in both boxes, making him an ideal fit for a move up to the Championship if the correct opportunity presents itself.

Now, it remains to be seen who will win the battle for his signature. Derby and Blackburn have become foes on the pitch. Could they also continue that relationship away from the field of play?

Sheffield Wednesday ready to sign 18 y/o gem who could replace Charles

Following rumours that Premier League sides are interested in signing Pierce Charles this summer, Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly ready to sign a young shot-stopper in a bargain deal.

Pierce Charles attracting Premier League interest

At just 19 years old, Charles has been a true bright spark for Sheffield Wednesday even as issues away from the pitch attempt to rain down on what has otherwise been a solid season for Danny Rohl’s side. Even as owner Dejphon Chansiri has continued to struggle financially – resulting in a two-point deduction for the Owls – Rohl has kept his side away from the threat of Championship relegation two seasons on the trot.

As the summer approaches, however, even the German may not stay put in Sheffield, with reported interest from the likes of Leicester City and Southampton reportedly emerging. Losing Rohl, more so than any player, would arguably be Wednesday’s greatest loss.

Meanwhile, their No.1 could also be joining Rohl on the list of departures. According to Graeme Bailey for EFL Analysis, Sheffield Wednesday are in danger of losing young goalkeeper Charles this summer amid interest from Fulham, Brentford and Everton.

Those at Hillsborough need no reminding of Charles’ quality, especially after the goalkeeper’s importance was recently recognised by the Sheffield Star when they awarded him with their Player of the Season award.

With that said, losing such a player and one whose best years are yet come would be an undoubted blow for all involved at Sheffield Wednesday, who could find themselves picked apart this summer.

Should Charles answer the Premier League call, the Owls will need to make finding a replacement one of their top priorities. And that could see a former Premier League goalkeeper arrive at a bargain price.

Sheffield Wednesday ready to sign Zeitzen

According to The Star, Sheffield Wednesday are now ready to sign Michael Zeitzen from Stoke City this summer, with the 18-year-old currently on trial at the club ahead of a potential decision. With his contract coming to an end at the Potters at the end of the current campaign too, the Owls would be landing a bargain deal to possibly replace Charles.

Zeitzen has primarily played U18 football this season, making 11 appearances in the U18 Premier League and two in the FA Youth Cup whilst keeping two clean sheets in a frustrating campaign. Now, as his time at Stoke City comes to an end, he desperately needs his next move to go right.

It wasn’t so long ago that the teenager was an Arsenal prospect before struggling to gain first team opportunities at Stoke. But at just 18 years old, Zeitzen’s story is far from finished and may yet be Sheffield Wednesday who help him realise the potential he was once showing in North London.

If Charles leaves, then welcoming a young goalkeeper at a bargain price would certainly make sense for the Owls, who could be in for a busy summer on all fronts.

£18m Crystal Palace star is going to become more important than Guehi

Oliver Glasner entered his first full season at Crystal Palace after losing two of his key players from last season, with Michael Olise joining Bayern Munich and Joachim Andersen joining Fulham.

As a result, Crystal Palace spent around £78.5m in the 2024/25 season, making five permanent signings and two loan signings in the summer window, with a further one permanent signing and one loan move in January.

Many have spoken about the impact of losing Olise and effectively replacing his output, but after also losing Andersen, the Eagles bought two new defenders on permanent deals, as well as Trevoh Chalobah on loan from Chelsea.

This season, Palace are averaging 43% possession per game, giving them the fourth lowest possession numbers in the Premier League.

However, with this, the Eagles have formed a formidable defensive unit, conceding 12.9 shots per game and only conceding 1.36 goals per game – having notably held off Bournemouth last time out despite losing Chris Richards to a red card.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Playing in Glasner’s 3-4-2-1 system, the three central defenders and two wingbacks have formed a brilliant defensive contingent, pulling the Eagles up to comfortably in mid-table in the league this term.

Crystal Palace star will become more important than Guehi

The likes of Richards, Dean Henderson, Marc Guehi, Daniel Munoz and Tyrick Mitchell have all been key to this defensive solidity, but one summer signing has arguably been the most important in their entire back line, bringing a new dynamic to Glasner’s defence this campaign.

Crystal Palace bought a certain Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg for a fee that will reach up to £18m. The 25-year-old has made 35 appearances for the club since joining, scoring once, providing one assist and contributing to 12 clean sheets in his 3,209 minutes played.

The French defender has been deployed as the central centre-back in Glasner’s back three, often partnered by Guehi to his left and Richards to his right.

The addition of Lacroix has added some much-needed recovery pace to their backline, as well as some extra aggression when jumping out to press.

When comparing the underlying metrics of both Lacroix and Marc Guehi this season, you can see how their roles differ.

Guehi has better passing numbers, often orchestrating from the back with his progressive nature, whilst Lacroix is more of the defensive aggressor, making more tackles and interceptions to regain possession for his side.

Premier League legend Alan Shearer labelled Lacroix a “commanding” presence in the heart of the Palace defence, something that has been echoed this season by plenty of Eagles fans.

With many fans unsure about Guehi’s future entering the last season of his contract next campaign, the signing of Lacroix is even sweeter, knowing, no matter what, the Frenchman will be at the club next season. Thus, he could soon become even more important to Glasner and Co.

Leeds now considering promotion move for "sensational" England international

Leeds United are reportedly weighing up a move for a “sensational” England international this summer as they gear up for a return to the Premier League, according to a new report.

Leeds planning for Premier League after smashing Stoke

Thanks to a crucial Good Friday victory over Oxford United and a complete demolition job of Stoke City, Leeds United are now within touching distance of promotion. With top-flight football now looking extremely likely, speculation is already mounting over summer reinforcements, as manager Daniel Farke looks to strengthen his squad to ensure survival next season.

Several names have already been linked with a potential move to Elland Road, including Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn, Sporting CP and Japan midfielder Hidemasa Morita, and West Ham United’s Tomas Souček.

According to Claret and Hugh, Farke is an admirer of the Czech Republic international and has identified him as a potential addition to his Premier League plans.

“Leeds are planning for next season — Daniel Farke has already started preparations for the summer window. He likes Souček, but there’s already a Premier League offer in for him,” the publication reports, citing an insider.

The same source also claims that Leeds have an interest in Irish striker Evan Ferguson, who is currently on loan at West Ham from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Lilywhites considering swoop for Johnstone

Another name reportedly on Leeds United’s radar is Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. The 32-year-old, who has earned four caps for England, joined Wolves last summer in a deal worth around £10 million.

However, his opportunities have been limited – he’s made just seven Premier League appearances, with his last outing coming back in October. Since then, manager Vítor Pereira has preferred Dan Bentley and José Sá in goal.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Leeds are now showing strong interest in Johnstone and are considering a summer move as they seek a replacement for Illan Meslier, who is expected to depart after recently losing his place in Daniel Farke’s starting XI.

Nixon reports that Wolves would only sanction Johnstone’s departure if they receive an offer matching the £10 million they paid Crystal Palace for him just eight months ago.

Johnstone has previously earned praise from former England international and pundit Gary Lineker for his outstanding reflexes. While playing for West Bromwich Albion, Johnstone pulled off a stunning last-minute save to deny Harry Maguire a potential winner in a match against boyhood club Manchester United – securing a vital point for the Baggies.
