Who is Arsenal transfer target Gabriel Magalhaes? – Profile

Name: Gabriel Magalhaes

Club: LOSC Lille

Date of Birth: 19 December 1997

Position: centre-back

Gabriel Magalhaes – His career so far

Magalhaes was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the age of 15 he joined Avai FC’s youth academy. After four years as a youngster for the Brazilian side, the defender earned promotion up to the senior team in 2016 – Magalhaes played for just one season in Brazil before getting spotted by French side Lille.

The young Brazilian centre-back initially joined Lille in 2017 for just £1.5m, though before playing with the first team he was loaned out to Ligue 2 side Troyes, as well as Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb – both between 2017-18. Magalhaes made his way back to France ahead of the 2018-19 Ligue 1 season where he played 14 times in the league.

The 22-year-old made 24 league appearances last season as he helped his side finish fourth, in addition to playing in this seasons Champions League on six occasions.

Transfer Latest

Gabriel Magalhaes has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, and the in-demand defender has been on the radar of Arsenal, most notably. Lille have valued the Brazilian at around £27m; however, according to the Guardian, a €22m fee has been agreed with the French side and now it is up to Magalhaes if agrees to move to North London this summer.

Player Profile

At 6ft 3in, Magalhaes has been hailed as a defensive powerhouse in his latest season. Keeping 12 clean sheets in the league, the Brazilians presence in Lille’s defence has been a key factor behind this stat. He is a strong and powerful centre-back, and he is a natural born leader.

At just 22-years-of-age, the Brazilian has plenty of promise for the future and his abilities are rare to find in today’s game, at such a young age. For his height he does have all the speed needed to catch speedy attackers and he is comfortable on the ball.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs confident of completing deal for Kim Min-jae

Tottenham Hotspur are confident of completing a deal for Kim Min-jae this summer, according to reports in South Korea.

They are reportedly the front-runners to sign Kim in the summer, amid interest from Arsenal.

NaverSports claims Spurs are in negotiations with Beijing Guoan and are close to reaching an agreement. Both clubs have agreed a fee of £15m is sufficient for the defender and are now one step nearer to finalising terms, with expected to be wrapped up in a matter of days.

It is no secret that the Lilywhites have leaked goals for fun throughout the season, with nearly 50 shipped during the Premier League campaign.

Kim, affectionately nicknamed ‘Monster’ is an international teammate of Son Heung-min, who has struck nearly 20 goals for Spurs this season.

Jose Mourinho has made it clear that he wants to bring in a new centre-back, as Jan Vertonghen is likely to leave in a matter of weeks, while Juan Foyth’s future remains uncertain.

Despite his young age, the 23-year-old has already earned 30 caps for his country, scoring three goals so far. Along with Son, he won a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games, which exempted him from certain military duties (as per The Guardian).

The youngster cuts an imposing figure as he stands at 1,9m in height. Given his stature, it is hardly surprising Mourinho is keen to sign him in the summer. The Portuguese wanted to sign Harry Maguire during his time in charge of Manchester United and, although the Spurs manager ended up missing out on Maguire, Kim is of a similar build to the England centre-back.

Beijing are willing to let him leave for £15m, which should be more than affordable for Spurs. While Daniel Levy has insisted that he will not be spending ‘rivers of money’ in the summer, this seems to fall within Mourinho’s tight budget.

The Lilywhites were originally linked to the South Korean two years ago and they now believe they can get the deal done in a short space of time.

Tottenham fans, should Daniel Levy sign Kim in the summer? Let us know in the comments below!

Liverpool: Fans urge club to keep Joel Matip as transfer links emerge

Another potential outgoing could be on the cards for Liverpool, with Joel Matip at the forefront of the attention.

The centre-back has reportedly attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain who are looking to pursue a move for his signature this summer. That’s according to @Jordan_MChoco (relayed via @LFCTransferRoom), who claims manager Thomas Tuchel and sporting director Leonardo are admirers of Matip.

The Cameroon international has been with the Merseyside outfit since 2016, after he joined on a free transfer from Schalke 04 (via BBC Sport). Matip has participated in some huge games for the Reds, including the winning side that took on Tottenham Hotspur last season in the Champions League final.

However, despite his influence on the team, he is often left on the bench in favour of Joe Gomez. Matip also has a history of injury problems, missing 20 matches this season through a knee problem (via Transfermarkt).

Many Liverpool fans are fully against cashing in on the 28-year-old and have taken to Twitter to express this. One supporter has tweeted ‘they cannot have him’, whilst similarly another has firmly stated Matip is ‘not for sale’.

Arsenal: Mesut Ozil provides little worth anymore after he is dumped by Adidas

Mesut Ozil provides little worth to Arsenal anymore as Bild (via The Daily Mail) reported that Adidas have decided to end their seven-year, £17.5 million association with him.

As per the outlet, the sportswear giant have chosen not to renew the playmaker’s sponsorship deal, a partnership which expires this month having started in 2013 and was worth around £2.5 million a year.

Ozil previously had a tie-up with rivals Nike and was a marquee capture for Adidas, joining the likes of Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba and Gareth Bale in their stable.

They are the German national team’s long-standing kit makers and also have their HQ in the country, making the central attacking midfield player a prize addition at the time.

Sources have told The Daily Mail that the decision not to extend the partnership is not connected to any controversies Ozil has previously been involved in, such as his retirement from international football.

Instead, the 31-year old’s deal was up for renewal at a time when his profile and status has fallen, leaving Adidas reluctant to commit to another big contract on similar terms.

Indeed, Ozil has arguably declined since the time that he joined the Gunners, to the extent that his performances in the 2019/2020 season so far have perhaps not quite been up to scratch.

The German playmaker has made just three assists and scored one goal in 23 appearances in all competitions, according to Transfermarkt.

AFC may have benefited from Adidas merchandise associated with Ozil sold, but the fact that he has now been dumped, coupled with his relatively underwhelming displays as of late, mean that he provides little worth at the Emirates anymore.

Gooners, does Ozil still have a place at Arsenal? Comment below!

WHAT HAPPENED?

Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi has already been joined in Florida by the familiar faces of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba since making his way to the United States. There has been talk of Luis Suarez treading a similar path at some stage in the near future.

Before any deal is done there, the prospect of Vidal heading to America has been discussed. The 36-year-old Chile international midfielder, who spent two years at Barcelona between 2018 and 2020, is preparing to sever ties with Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense after leaving Flamengo in July. He has told of heading to MLS: “I would happily go and play with Messi. With him it's very easy, you just have to pass him the ball. In the United States there are several rules that prevent more older players from going, that's why it hasn't happened before. I would be delighted to play with Leo, Busquets – they play by heart and now Inter Miami plays like that too, with a good coach [Tata Martino].”

AND WHAT'S MORE

Vidal, who has earned 140 caps for his country, has also discussed the possibility of lining up against Messi at the 2024 Copa America – which will take place in America. He added on the all-time great, who has suggested that he will not be defending a global crown with Argentina at the 2026 World Cup: “I see Messi playing for a long time with the Argentine team. He enjoys it and is happy wearing the Argentine shirt.”

'Too many changes' – Mauricio Pochettino fires warning to Chelsea ownership over January transfer window after unprecedented summer spending

Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino feels his team have struggled to get going this season because too many changes were made over the summer.

Chelsea spent big in summerHave had slow start to seasonCoach warned about changesWHAT HAPPENED?

Chelsea's difficult start to the campaign has them sitting 11th in the Premier League with just three wins from their first 10 matches, most recently losing 2-0 at home to Brentford.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The London team's struggles come despite their massive spending since co-owner Todd Boehly took control of the club in 2022. Over the course of the summer transfer window, the Blues splashed out on the likes of Moises Caicedo, Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Cole Palmer and Axel Disasi, among others.

Pochettino feels so many changes have made it difficult for his team to blend together as they prepare for the January transfer window.

WHAT THEY SAID

"At the moment, I think we are a young team, a young team means too many changes in the summer because of the circumstances and we are suffering – sometimes good and bad results, but performances are consistent," he said at a press conference.

The Argentine also urged the owners to learn from "mistakes" they have made since taking over, saying: "Things that go against you, you have to try to resist them and try to survive. You have to be quiet and be strong. And not to lose your balance, because it is easy to blame or say something that is going to affect other people and lead to division in the club.

"The important thing is to trust the ideas, the judgment and analysis of why certain things have not happened. To help the organisation to be better and to improve, and not to make the same mistakes again. The most important thing is to learn from the mistakes."

How many goals has Karim Benzema scored during his career? Al-Ittihad superstar's crazy stats in full

Karim Benzema has long been regarded as one of the greatest strikers of his generation, but just how many times in total has he found the net?

Karim Benzema has long been regarded as one of the most well-rounded forwards in the game and his recent Ballon d'Or win confirmed his status as one of the greatest of his generation.

He has been a constant presence for Real Madrid for over a decade, but he was not always been the dominant force at the Santiago Bernabeu as he spent a large chunk of his career in the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Known for his exceptional work-rate, potent finishing and playmaking, the Frenchman sacrificed his own attacking returns for many seasons to be an amazing provider for the Portuguese star, who garnered all the media attention.

Following Ronaldo's departure in 2018, Benzema's rise has been a meteoric one. His reputation as one of the world's best operators in European football grew multi-folds year after year, as did his goal-scoring output.

Now plying his trade in the Middle-East with reigning Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad, and as they say, he is ageing like a fine wine and if anything he only seems to be getting better with age.

But just how many goals has he scored during his outrageous career at Lyon, Real Madrid, Al-Ittihad, and France?

Let's take a look.

GettyHow many goals does Karim Benzema have for Al-Ittihad?

In a shock move, Benzema left Real Madrid in the summer of 2023 after 14 trophy-laden seasons at the Bernabeu, following in Cristiano Ronaldo's footsteps and becoming the second global superstar to quit European football for Saudi Pro League adventure.

Al-Ittihad come off of an emphatic title win over Ronaldo's Al-Nassr and are considered the dominant force in Saudi Arabia. Add a five-time Champions League winner and current Ballon d'Or holder to the mix, as well as a sprinkling of other high-profile signings, they are the odds-on favourites to repeat their success from last season.

In 2009, Benzema joined Real Madrid for a transfer fee of €35 million, rising to €41 million based on add-ons.

However, he had a rough start at his new club as he scored just nine in 33 appearances in his debut season.

He eventually came good, though, and following Gareth Bale's then-record transfer from Tottenham Hotspur, Bale, Benzema, and Cristiano Ronaldo forged one of Europe's most fearsome attacking trios, dubbed the BBC.

However, the French star's selfless contributions, work ethic, and ability to creating plays and spaces for others to exploit seemingly went unnoticed at times.

Now that Ronaldo has left the Santiago Bernabeu, however, Benzema is finally thriving more and getting the spotlight he deserves.

He is currently second on the all-time scoring list for Madrid and fourth on all-time UEFA Champions League charts, with former team-mate Ronaldo topping both podiums.

Getty ImagesHow many goals did Benzema get for Lyon

Benzema began his youth career with Bron before joining boyhood club Lyon in 1997. He progressed through the youth ranks and then made his first senior appearance for the French outfit in 2005.

He assisted Lyon’s second goal and subsequently went on to sign his first professional contract with the club.

Despite his tender years, Benzema earned a reputation for himself as a lethal finisher from within the box with either foot and his head, despite being typically right-footed.

Benzema recorded 66 goals in 148 competitive appearances for Lyon and later became one of France's highest-paid players after renewing his contract in 2008.

During his time at Lyon, he earned himself the Ligue 1 top scorer, French Cup top scorer, several player of the month awards.

It's safe to say Benzema's international career has been a turbulent one, full of controversy.

In 2006, before his international career even started, he spoke openly about his desire to play for the Algerian national team, the native country of both of his parents, but would play for France for only sporting reasons.

In 2015, Noel Le Graet, the president of the FFF, suspended the striker indefinitely from the national team after he was arrested by police for his alleged involvement in blackmailing fellow France international player Mathieu Valbuena.

He didn't appear for France between 2016-2020 and this absence has tainted his CV. He was called back by Didier Deschamps in 2021

Since his return, he has been showing what France missed out on and he also helped them win a Nations League trophy.

Jalen Neal: The USMNT's Gold Cup rising star emerging as American soccer's next top center-back

The LA Galaxy defender has made a massive leap this year, with his performances this summer suggesting he could go to the very top

United States men's national team interim coach B.J. Callaghan is still relatively new to media duties, but he's plenty familiar with coach-speak. When leading a team, there are certain things you can and cannot say, and because of that, coaches tend to stick to familiar talking points.

Callaghan, though, deviated slightly this week when asked to name a specific player that has stood out to him. The coach-speak answer would have been to praise the team, to hail the group atmosphere that is bigger than one individual. That's not what Callaghan did, though. Instead, he pointed to one player: Jalen Neal.

"From the perspective of a player that has impressed," he began, "the situation that somebody like Jalen Neal was put into, coming in at half-time (against Jamaica) as a young player against, quite honestly, a really dangerous front four and a top, top international striker in Michail Antonio, I think his performance, I wouldn't say surprised us, but the calm and the maturity that he showed lends to a bright future for him. For me, that was a really great moment and something that we hope to continue to foster as he develops into what we hope is a big player for the U.S. men's national team."

This summer, Neal has become the USMNT's newest star. Playing at the Gold Cup, a tournament the U.S. uses as a chance to try out fringe players, Neal has passed his test with flying colors so far.

But who is Neal and how did he rise so quickly with the USMNT? GOAL has everything you need to know about the young defender…

GettyWhere it all began

Neal has been with LA Galaxy from the start, joining the club's academy in 2016 as a teenager after being raised in nearby Lakewood. He's risen through the ranks, appearing in the former U.S. Soccer Development Academy system before becoming a fixture for LA Galaxy II in 2020. He made 12 appearances for the club in the USL Championship that season, making his debut at just 16 years old.

By 2021, the defender had signed a contract with the Galaxy's senior team, completing his rise from academy starlet to first team. “Jalen is a talented defender who has shown his capability at the professional level last season with LA Galaxy II,” then-GM Dennis te Kloese said in a club statement. “We are excited that he will become another player on our first-team roster that has come through our developmental system. We look forward to Jalen continuing to learn and grow with our club.”

He remained with Los Dos for the next two years, though, making 48 appearances, but was handed his first-team debut in 2022 in a U.S. Open Cup win over California United Strikers.

“These last few years with the second team have been really building my confidence," Neal said prior to the 2023 MLS season. "I’ve gotten to grow physically, mentally, vocally too, and I think my leadership on the field has improved a lot. I think I’m ready to take that step to the next level, for sure.”

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe big break

Prior to the start of the 2023 MLS season, LA Galaxy coach Gregg Vanney tipped Neal for a big year. "He just has a really calm, cool demeanor about what he does," Vanney said. "He’s never really frazzled and gives us nice quality with and without the ball. The next step for him is exposure. Having to live those moments against top players and work with his team-mates.”

Well, it's safe to say Vanney called his shot. Neal's year began with a call-up to the USMNT for the annual January camp, a gathering often used to integrate some of the younger members of the player pool. Neal, of course, was a notable inclusion as he had not yet made his MLS debut for the Galaxy prior to being called-up.

He, ultimately, featured for the senior national team before his senior club team, as he made his USMNT debut against Serbia during that camp. In the months since, he's certainly built off that momentum, becoming a mainstay for the Galaxy in central defense.

Neal has been so important for the Galaxy, in fact, that the club controversially refused to release him for this summer's Under-20 World Cup. He was too vital to the team, the Galaxy said, as Neal, a regular for the U20s, was prevented from travelling to Argentina as the Galaxy looked to stay afloat after a tough start to the season.

It hasn't hurt his standing with the national team, though, as Neal has quickly become the breakout star of this Gold Cup campaign.

GettyHow it's going

Neal is the third-youngest member of the USMNT's Gold Cup squad. He's also far and away the youngest central defender in the team. The LA Galaxy star, though, has been fantastic so far for the U.S., offering the composure of a veteran despite being a teenager.

After Aaron Long went down with an injury in the opening match against Jamaica, Neal stepped in at half-time and improved the USMNT defense. While the U.S. was shaky against the likes of Antonio and Leon Bailey in the first half, Neal helped the U.S. backline immensely as the team came back for a 1-1 draw.

"Jalen Neal was honestly put into a tough situation tonight and exudes what we preach all the time: when you're number's called, you step up," Callaghan said of the young defender after the draw. "He did it in a calm, composed way and that's what you're most happy about. The stage wasn't too big for him. He stepped right in and did a tremendous job."

He was handed his first start of the tournament in the next game against St. Kitts and Nevis and, once again, he didn't put a foot wrong. The U.S., of course, dominated the game, but, even with that caveat, it was hard not to come away impressed with Neal's performance.

Neal completed more passes than any other USMNT player in the win, including one absurd line-breaking pass from inside his own half to set up a chance, while also winning the most duels.

LA GalaxyBiggest strengths

It doesn't take long to figure out what those in LA and with the USMNT see in Neal. At 6'3, Neal is the perfect height for a center-back and, at 19, there's still plenty of time for him to fill out that big frame. Thanks to that frame, though, he's already solid enough in the air.

Still, the first thing you really notice about Neal's game is his composure on the ball. He's already got that modern center-back mentality, despite being very, very new to the professional game. He's smooth on the ball and can kickstart attacks. Neal can keep things ticking, but also step forward and hit passes that break lines, making him an evolving weapon even from that center-back spot. There are times where he feels like a midfielder in a defender's body; his vision is simply that good.

Because of that, he's already a great partner for a more 'old school' central defender that can help cover up some of the still-evolving aspects of Neal's game.

Man Utd end Arsenal's perfect start! Women's Super League winners and losers as Chelsea exploit Emirates upset

The Gunners were 2-1 up but suffered late agony, paving the way for their London rivals to move three points clear at the top of the table

With three results changed by late goals, this weekend's Women's Super League action produced plenty of drama and entertainment once again.

Manchester United brought Arsenal's perfect start to the season to an end with a stoppage-time winner, while West Ham broke the hearts of bottom club Leicester in similar circumstances.

Finally, Liverpool came from two goals down to get a point from Brighton, with the game's final goal coming in the 92nd minute.

So, who had a good week and who had one to forget? GOAL breaks down the chaos below…

GettyWINNER: Chelsea

After watching title rivals Arsenal lose on Saturday, Sunday was the perfect day for Chelsea.

They scored three goals and conceded none in a London derby against Tottenham, putting on a great performance at Stamford Bridge in their first appearance at the stadium this season.

They also welcomed back Emma Hayes for the match, the Blues manager back in the dugout for the first time since undergoing surgery last month, as they went three points clear of the Gunners at the top of the table.

Furthermore, with the champions scoring all three goals in the first half, it meant they were able to make a few early substitutions after the break to rest players ahead of a big midweek fixture, against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Not a bad weekend at all for Chelsea.

AdvertisementGettyLOSER: Arsenal

Arsenal's 100 per cent record in the league this season came to an end in painful fashion on Saturday evening, with Manchester United running out 3-2 winners at the Emirates thanks to Alessia Russo's stoppage-time header.

After a poor first half, in which they fell behind to an Ella Toone strike, the Gunners took the lead and looked set to see out the win. But United showed incredible character to fight back and take the three points.

It is a setback for Arsenal in their quest for the title, and their first trophy in three years. Fortunately, there is a lot of time left in the season for them to recover.

That will be the interesting thing to watch now, though, as it is the first time this season that this team has failed to win a game of football.

How they respond will be important, particularly given their next fixture is a trip to Juventus in the Champions League to face their old boss, Joe Montemurro.

GettyWINNER: Katie Zelem

Russo grabbed the headlines for her last-gasp winner on Saturday but Katie Zelem was superb in midfield and her set-piece deliveries were crucial to the result.

After helping her team to control large parts of the game, the England international whipped in a superb free-kick in the 85th minute that Millie Turner met brilliantly to thump a header off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Once the clock ticked into stoppage time, she then put in another great delivery that Russo connected with to win the game.

Her ability from these situations is deserving of a 'specialist' tag while her overall performance in a huge game will have caught the eye of Sarina Wiegman, the England coach who often picks the midfielder but doesn't give her too many minutes in games.

If she can replicate this level of display on a consistent basis, that will surely change.

GettyLOSER: Brighton

Brighton are often portrayed as a well-drilled, defensively sound team that are difficult to break down. So far this season, we have just not seen that side of them.

On Sunday, it really hurt them, with the Seagulls leading Liverpool 3-1 as early as the 34th minute, only to concede two goals late in the second half – the equaliser in injury time – to drop two points.

Rachel Furness' 92nd-minute goal was the 26th they've conceded in the league this term in just their seventh game. It's a desperately poor record.

The club are still looking for a new coach after the legendary Hope Powell left in the wake of a humiliating 8-0 loss to Tottenham last month and things should improve once that replacement is found.

Powell's successor will look to rectify those issues at the back straight away and if that objective is achieved, Brighton can quickly put any relegation worries behind them, as the reality is, in spite of their long-held reputation, that this is a team with goals in them too.
